The Sculpture
Central to Mungenast’s sculpture are three nine-foot high military figures positioned on a circular granite pedestal, representing the Old Guard’s history and mission. Their monumental presence is under the flag of the United States that they revere and protect. A standard military grave marker is testament to their presence and service at the National Cemetery at Arlington, site of the Tomb of the Unknowns and resting place for legions of the nation’s heroes. Its inscription, “To Honor Our Own,” expresses the Old Guard soldier’s guiding principle, daily motivation and perpetual inspiration
